No entry was gained and nothing was stolen. Reference: 0824 24th October Location: Ryecroft Drive, Horsham Date and time: time and date unknown Details: An attempt was made to enter a conservatory, attempt failed and no entry was gained but damage caused. Reference: 1138 28th October Location: Smithbarn, Horsham Date and time: Between 1200hrs and 1815hrs 28th October Details: A patio door was broken, unknown if anything was stolen. Reference: 1157 28th October Location: Pondtail Road, Horsham Date and time: Between 1530hrs and 1830hrs 28th October Details: A 1st floor window was forced open, jewellery and cash were stolen. Burglary other than Dwelling Reference: 0254 23rd October Location: Littleworth Lane, Partridge Green Date and time: Between 1830hrs 20th October and 1700hrs 21st October Details: A padlock was removed from an outbuilding and an attempt was made to force the door, no entry was gained. Reference: 1167 24th October Location: School Lane, Ashurst, Steyning Date and time: Between 21st and 23rd October Details: An attempt was made to remove the lock on a garage door, the attempt failed and no entry was gained. Reference: 0540 26th October Location: Clays Hill, Bramber, Steyning Date and time: Between 1900hrs 25th October and 1130hrs 26th October Details: A window was forced open on a garage and pedal cycles were stolen. A shed was also entered after the padlock was removed and power tools and mountain bikes were stolen. Reference: 0909 27th October Location: Culcross Grange, Wimlands Lane, Faygate Date and time: Time and date unknown Details: A shed was entered and power tools were stolen. Other There have been reports of criminal damage in the Steyning area. If anyone has seen or has any CCTV of any suspicious activity in the area, please call us on 101. Rural Crime Three thefts of equine equipment have been reported to Sussex Police in the past week, one each in our Shipley, Coolham and Storrington areas.  If you have connections with any local stables, please check that security arrangements are up-to-date and encourage reporting of any suspicious behaviour, people or vehicles.  Have you thought about alarm systems on doors which trigger phone alerts, CCTV, lighting, good quality locks? Don’t forget to lock away outside tools as these can be used to break into properties. Call us on 101 to report a crime or call us on 999 if you think a crime is in progress. News and appeals  Sussex Police remind residents to keep a light on As the nights draw in, Sussex Police is reminding people to keep a light on and take steps to protect their homes from burglars. From Monday 28th October to Sunday 3rd November, the force is running Operation Magpie, its bi-annual burglary prevention and awareness campaign, providing timely advice to people on securing their property. During the week prevention advice and tips will be shared on social media. This year’s campaign will also focus on preventing break-ins in rural areas. Which can be more vulnerable to burglary. Following the introduction of dedicated rural crime Police and Community Support Officers (PCSOs) they will be patrolling potential hot-spots in the countryside, aiming to engage with residents and offer advice and reassurance while providing a high-visibility deterrent to criminals. Sussex Police takes reports of burglary seriously and keeps unsolved cases under constant review. Detective Chief Inspector Alasdair Henry, Sussex Police burglary lead, said: “Burglary is a horrible crime which can cause victims long-lasting suffering. Whether it be the invasion of your home, damage to your business premises or the theft of essential work tools, it is totally abhorrent to us and that is why our priority is to reduce this crime and catch those who are responsible. David Cairns, 68, left home a few minutes after 8am on Saturday (October 26) to take his car to Broadbridge Heath Garage on the Lawson Hunt Industrial Park. He dropped off the car at 8.45amand left as it was going to take a while to deal with. He has not been seen since, either by his family or the garage, who have both tried David is white, 6', of chubby build with short white/grey hair and wears glasses. He was wearing a grey sweatshirt, blue jeans and possibly a navy blue sleeveless puffer jacket. A laptop and cash were stolen.  Reference: 0112 3rd September  Location:  Burns Close, Horsham  Date and time: Between 17th August and 3rd September   Details: Patio doors were broken and property entered, IPad’s were stolen.   Other than Dwelling  Reference: 0307 31st August  Location: Newlands Road, Horsham  Date and time: Time unknown  Details: Someone has walked down the path to the rear of a house and entered a garage, nothing stolen.  Reference: 0836 2nd September  Location: Nutbourne, Pulborough  Date and time: Time frame unknown  Details: Shed and greenhouse broken into. Dear Co-ordinator, We are short, compared with usual, of volunteers for Operation Tulip this Saturday and would much appreciate your kind consideration. If you cannot assist yourself, it would be really helpful to NHW and the Police if you would send this message to your members Operation Tulip is the annual campaign to advise the public of the seasonal break-ins and criminality involving the theft, usually from sheds and outbuildings, of garden machinery. For several years, NHW volunteers have assisted the Police at garden centres and elsewhere in furnishing advice and distributing Police leaflets, advising the public to take necessary precautions to secure and mark their equipment and to note registration numbers of more expensive machinery. The Police, during these times of spending cuts, have enormously valued our attendance and assistance but, more important, NHW members have made a real contribution to the security of Horsham District residents and have minimised the incidence of crime and, therefore, reduced resultant misery by way of their actions. These events are supervised by the Police. Usually, we take a table in tandem with the Police, at garden centres. It is envisaged that this year, volunteers will also accompany the Police in their van, visiting some outlying villages. Volunteers require no specialist knowledge. All have remarked as to how much they have enjoyed the day and how much satisfaction volunteering in the community has brought them, not least because they appreciate that, by their actions, they have prevented a considerable degree of upset by making it less simple for criminals to strike. Man charged with drug-driving following fatal collision in Horsham

A lorry driver involved in a collision in Horsham, following which a motorist died, has been charged with drug-driving.

Police were called to the two-vehicle collision involving a Volvo tipper truck and a Citroen C4 at the junctions of Comptons Lane and Heron Way at about 10.38am on Tuesday 5 July.

The driver of the Citroen, 68-year-old Peter Etherington, of Capricorn Close, Crawley, is believed to have suffered a medical episode at the wheel, which caused his car to go into the path of the lorry. He sadly died at the scene.

Two 15-year-old boys, who were passengers in the car, were treated for injuries.

The lorry driver was arrested in connection with the collision and has since been charged with drug-driving.

Ryan Bosher, 35, of Eddington Hill, Crawley, is charged with driving with 589mcg of benzoylecgonine (the major metabolite of cocaine) per litre of blood in his system. The legal limit is 50mcg.

He is due to appear before Crawley Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 13 September.

Crime attempts - alert

Sussex Neighbourhood Watch wishes to alert residents to two ongoing types of crime attempts in parts of Sussex. Be aware that it could spread, so you need to be ready.
 
Firstly, one of our coordinators was telephoned this morning by a lady who told her that her bank wanted to return an amount of interest owing to her. The caller quoted our coordinator's name and address and it all sounded very plausible. Our coordinator then asked the caller which bank or building society this returned interest would be coming from. The caller said she didn't have that information. When our coordinator started to ask more questions the line went dead. It all sounded so convincing.
Please be very cautious about giving personal information if somebody phones you. 
 
Secondly, keep your car keys safe. There is a recognised type of burglary where offenders will enter your home purely to steal your keys in order to take your car.

advance fee fraud.

People selling their items on online platforms are falling victim to a new type of advance fee fraud. This involves a fraudster, posing as a buyer, sending an email to the seller (victim), agreeing to the full asking price of the item. They state that they are unable to collect the item themselves and will arrange for a courier to pick it up instead. 

The fraudster then sends a fake payment confirmation email from a different email address, one which falsely purports to be from a payment platform. In the course of the email exchange, the seller/victim is requested to pay the courier fee. Once the payment is made the contact is broken, the item is not picked up and the money paid for the ‘courier’ is gone. 

An example of the most recent emails received by the victim/seller, from the ‘Buyer’, read:

“I want you to consider this a deal as i am willing to pay your full asking price! i actually want to buy it for a family member who is urgently in need of it, i have checked through your posting and i'm fully satisfied with it. Unfortunately, i would not be able to come personally to view/collect, i work offshore as an instructor on a oil rig so i dont have time at all, but like i said i am 100% OK with the advert”

 
Protect Yourself:

• Be wary when buyers wish to purchase items at the full asking price without viewing them. 
• Check the validity of the payment receipt confirmation
• Avoid paying an advanced fee if you are a seller; should you choose to use a courier, arrange your own.
• Check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller/buyer. Feedback will give you useful information about recent transactions other buyers/sellers have made.

Roffey Burglary Alert

Serial 908 of 03/03 relates to a burglary at a property in Roffey.

Between 10:10am and 12:40pm on Thursday 3 March intruders gained entry to a house in Redwing Close.

Access was gained via a rear window.

A quantity of foreign currency was stolen.

Two men were arrested at 3.30pm in West Street, Horsham in connection with this burglary.

At around 3.15pm officers were called to a currency shop in West Street where two men had been trying to exchange some foreign notes. The shop workers became suspicious and called police.

A 31-year-old man and 32-year-old man both from Horsham have been arrested and are both in custody.
