Olympic Torch Relay event

Important message for Neighbourhood Watch members in Crawley, Horsham and nearby areas

Dear Neighbourhood Watch members,

The Olympic Torch relay will be passing through Crawley on Tuesday 17th July on its way towards London. This is a once in a lifetime occasion, and Crawley is honoured to be selected to be on this prestigious route.

The organisers are looking to create a team of volunteers who will assist with marshalling spectators and closure of side roads. They have chosen to approach Neighbourhood Watch, recognising our long term commitment towards making Crawley a happy and safe place to live, work or visit. Neighbourhood Watch members are respected for their reliability and the important part they play in our community. This is your opportunity to take part in this rare community event, and incidentally get a close up view of the Torch.

The organisers need to compile a list of adult individuals, including their full contact details, who would like to be part of this exciting event. You do not need to be a resident of Crawley, so people from Horsham and surrounding areas are welcome to join in as well. ALL NHW MEMBERS ARE WELCOME TO VOLUNTEER. Please see the attached form. You can send this to Toby Shaw via Email/post, or just send him an E-mail toby.shaw@crawley.gov.uk giving the same details. We hope that as many Neighbourhood Watch members as possible will volunteer to join in and demonstrate their true community spirit. If you are able to assist us, or would like further information, then please contact Toby Shaw, Community Development Officer, Crawley Borough Council, 01293 438655 .

As well as the 17th July, please keep yourself available for the volunteer briefing on the evening of 16th July (time to be confirmed) which will take place at K2 Leisure Centre. If, in the meantime, you have any questions about this event, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

We look forward to your help on Monday 16th July and Tuesday 17th July, and your valuable contribution towards making this a truly memorable occasion.

Please spare the time if possible and make your town shine, you may even see yourself on the television!

Best regards

Sussex Policing Live!

Have you ever wanted to ask your local police commander what their plans are for the forthcoming year? Or what they most enjoy about their role? Perhaps you just would like to know what their favourite music is!!
Next Tuesday, 17 April you will be able to do just that when each of Sussex Police's 13 District Commanders (or equivalents) takes part in a day of live web chats as part of our commitment to become more open and transparent.
Following on from the success of Sussex Police People, each District Commander or their representatives, will take part in a 45-minute online chat, with all 13 being staggered throughout the day (final timings to be confirmed). Members of public will be able to submit questions to their local officer and chat with them via the Sussex Police website or via Twitter @sussex_police using the hashtag #policinglive.
Lewes District Commander Chief Inspector Jason Tingley said: "This is a great opportunity for people to contact us to discuss what is important to them. They can ask us what plans we have for combating and reducing crime in their areas. Perhaps they have ideas which they think will make a difference in their communities. We want to hear from you."
Each District Commander has recorded a Vlog which will go live on Friday 13 April and people are encouraged to submit questions and feedback before, during and after the live event. The final schedule for the day will also be posted on the website on Friday.
Those taking part are:
Chief Inspector Dick Coates - Wealden
A/Supt Ian Pollard - Adur and Worthing
Chief Inspector Jane Derrick - Arun
Chief Inspector Rachel Bacon - Chichester

NW102 - 12 April 2012

In the past couple of weeks we have seen a rise in thefts of power tools and lawnmowers from outbuildings (sheds/garages etc). Two incidences have been repeat thefts from previous years.

Serial 0455 01/03/12  relates to a theft of a sit on lawnmower in Sedgewick Lane, Horsham. It was stolen sometime between 23.00hrs 29/02/12 and 06.00hrs 01/03/12.
Serial 1537 11/03/12 relates to a theft of a lawnmower in Nuthurst Road, Maplehurst. A noise was heard around 22.00rs on the evening of the 10th but this theft was only noticed in the morning.
Serial 0392 17/03/12  relates to a theft of power tools from a wooden shed and an attempted break to a garage in Handcross Road, Plummers Plain.
Serial 0481 17/03/12 relates to a break in to out buildings that housed a sit on lawnmower. The lawnmower was not stolen on this occasion. This occurred in Hammerpond Road, Plummers Plain.

Domestic sheds and garages
  • Wherever possible do not store valuable items in sheds.
  • Always lock your shed and garage and fit a good quality padlock. Ideally with a small ‘hoop’ as this makes it more difficult for bolt croppers to be used.
  • Install a shed alarm.
  • Shackle large items such as bicycles and lawn mowers together and, if possible secure to a permanent fixture such as a cemented metal post. This will make it difficult for thieves to remove.
  • Ladders and spades should also be attached to a secure fixture. These items are often used by thieves to gain access to properties. Do not leave unattended in gardens.
  • Visibly mark all removable items such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and garden furniture with your postcode and house number. If you are not intending to trade in your power tool/lawnmower in for the newest model it is best to deface your item by using permanent marker pen and writing your postcode on all visible parts. This will help deter the thief, as they will not want to get caught carrying goods which clearly will not be theirs and it also makes it more difficult to sell on. Even if they manage to scrub off the postcode it will be permanently damaged and would raise questions should they be stopped by the Police.Alternatively use an ultra violet marker or property marking system such as SmartWater.
  • Replace ordinary screws on outbuilding doors with non-return screws or file down the existing ones so that a screwdriver cannot be used.
  • Make a note of make/model/serial number of tools and bicycles.
  • Obscure the windows of your shed/garage to prevent thieves seeing what you have inside.

Kind regards PCSO Tracy Field

NW101 - 12 April 2012

In recent weeks there have been a number of vehicle thefts in Haywards Heath and surrounding villages. The majority of vehicles taken have been 4x4's and in some cases, keys had actually been left in the vehicles. Not only does this make it incredibly easy for the offenders, but the victims are likely to find that their insurance will not cover them for the theft.
We are also currently experiencing a fairly high number of shed breaks and breaks to outbuildings, particularly in rural areas. The most common items that are being stolen are high value gardening equipment and power tools.
Please make every effort to secure your vehicles and outbuildings. Shed alarms can be purchased at very little cost and are easy to operate. If you require any crime prevention advice or further tips on security, please contact your local Neighbourhood Policing Team.

‘101’ has now been adopted by every police force in England and Wales as their non- emergency number.  It provides the public with one easy to remember number for contacting their local police wherever they are in the country. Calls to ‘101’ will cost 15 pence per call, no matter how long you are on the phone – this applies to both landlines and mobile phones. contact.centre@sussex.pnn.police.uk  is the Police email address for reporting like messages as for 101. It does not cost anything and a reference number is given in a reply message. An advantage of using this approach is that those making the report have a record of it and the reference number that applies for any future use.

NW100 - 12 April 2012
