Cycling visibilty

Serial 0783 of 25/10/12 relates to a complaint received from a member of public with regards to a cyclist riding without lights.

Everyday at around 0700 hours a cyclist is seen to ride along Kerves Lane in Horsham without lights on their bike and wearing dark clothing. Motorists often have to swerve last minute to avoid them as they haven’t seen them.

With the dark mornings and evenings now here, we would like to encourage those of you who do cycle (or anyone else in your household) to make sure that you take extra precautions to ensure that you are safe when cycling in the dark.
A few good tips for keeping safe and making yourself more visible are:
1) Make sure you have lights on your bicycle - you should have a white light at the front and a red light at the rear.
2) Reflectors can help make you more visible and are also a good idea.
3) Make sure you wear some sort or reflective clothing or bright clothing as this can help in the daytime, particularly if it is dull weather.
